Peat Mining

Peat is composed mainly of marshland vegetation: trees, grasses, fungi, as well as other types of organic remains, such as insects and animal remains. This organic product is used for potting and planting soils for nurseries, landscapers and homeowners. Once the peat is removed from the marshy areas, the land is then returned to its natural grade and becomes a lake which is important for water retention of the Floridian Aquifer. The peat deposits on the ranch are mined by Black Gold of Oxford, Florida (352-748-0569) and C&C Peat of Okahumpka, Florida (1-800-330-4866).
